Under normal conditions it is recommended that each set of two PF-2™ elements be replaced after 1,000 gallons The Royal Berkey® system is about 3.25 gallons therefore the PF-2™ filters should be replaced after 1,000/3.25 or 307 refills. If the system is refilled about one time per day, the PF-2™'s should be replaced after 10 months, if the system is refilled about twice per day, the PF-2™'s should be replaced about every five months). Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of Fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.
FLUORIDE: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm per cubic foot of media. Results of < 1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).

Sterasylâ„¢ Should be replaced once cleaning fails to restore the water flow. However, we usually recommend that Sterasylâ„¢ candles are replaced after 10,000 litres of water have passed through the candle, to guarantee optimum performance.
Super Sterasyl™, Carbosyl™, Supercarb™, and Ultracarb™ In combination filter elements (ceramic shells containing other types of filter media) cleaning the ceramic will not extend the life of the internal material. For example, the ‘life’ of the carbon block in Supercarb™ or Ultracarb™ filter elements is determined by the concentration of chlorine and/or volatile organic compounds in the water supply. The particulate and turbidity concentration in the water supply govern the life of the ceramic. This means that the life of the ceramic might or might not exceed the capacity of the carbon insert, depending on the water quality. Whichever point is reached first – the six months usage or the ceramic becoming blocked to the extent where cleaning does not restore the flow – governs when the filter element requires replacing.
In most cases, the filter element should be replaced after 6 - 12 months of daily use. The following flow guidelines can be used to guarantee optimum performance:

Under these regulations, the state of California requires that any water treatment system that is sold in the state first be certified by an independent, third-party testing agency, such as NSF, before the system can be considered eligible for sale in California. NSF Standard 42 (aesthetic effects) and Standard 53 (health effects) would specifically apply to our purification elements.
NSF Standard 42 covers systems “designed to reduce specific aesthetic or non-health-related contaminants such as chlorine, taste and odor, and particulates that may be present in public or private drinking water. NSF Standard 53 addresses “systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, lead, Volatile Organic Chemicals, MTBE that may be present in public or private drinking water.”
The tests we have conducted are much more rigorous than those required by NSF for the certifications mandated by the state of California. Our purifiers have been rigorously tested by third-party independent accredited labs far surpassing the above standard of taste, odor and chlorine reduction. For example, our systems have been tested for the removal of hundreds of contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, pathogenic bacteria and viruses. These test results are published and available to all our consumers on our website as well as published in our printed literature. In addition, there has also been other highly publicized and notable testing of our purifiers against other so-called similar water filtration systems which clearly back up our third-party testing. Although our extensive testing is sufficient for 49 states in the US, it is currently not acceptable for residents of the state California.
Once NSF certification has been obtained, the state of California additionally requires that companies pay high costs to obtain and maintain certification with the state of California.
In the end, we have concluded that the additional taxes, certifications and red tape have created too large of a barrier for our firm to offer our systems in the state of California

The HCA Gravity Water Filter is lightweight, durable and robust. It is compact, portable and simple to operate, requiring no external plumbing or power supply.
The HCA Gravity Water Filter should be fitted with Doulton® Sterasyl®, Doulton® Super Sterasyl® or Doulton® ATC Super Sterasyl® ceramic filter candles, which have been rigorously performance tested and verified by both in-house and independent testing laboratories
The Filter consists of two containers. The upper container is filled with untreated water which then filters down into the lower container, through a Doulton® ceramic filter candle.
The filter takes only minutes to assemble and can provide up to 40 litres (10 US gallons) of safe drinking water each day. One or two filter candles can be used, depending on the flow rate required.
The ease of operation combined with a proven effectiveness at eliminating waterborne diseases, such as cholera and typhoid, has led to the range of Doulton® gravity filters being used all over the world by many of the major aid and emergency relief organisations, often in the most demanding situations.

SUPER STERASYL™

Super Sterasyl™ uses granular activated carbon instead of an activated carbon block in order to give superior flow rates in a gravity filter. Granular carbon is not as effective as a carbon block under pressure conditions. Therefore, in a pressure filter, Supercarb™ should be used for chlorine and organics removal.

PF-4™ - POST FILTER REDUCTION ELEMENT
PF-4™ reduction elements, manufactured by New Millennium Concepts LTD are designed for use with Super Sterasyl™ ceramic filtration elements to adsorb the following four unwanted elements most commonly found in drinking water.

INSTALLATION:
Assemble the water filter as per the water filter assembly instruction. On the underside of the upper chamber locate the stem of each ceramic filter (do not remove the wing nut holding the ceramic filter in place). With clean hands, remove blue caps and screw a PF-4™ filter onto each filter stem (the blue arrow should point away from upper chamber) giving five full revolutions. Do not screw more than five revolutions as this may damage the internal media screen. When complete, seat upper chamber on top of the lower chamber. Fill upper reservoir. When the lower reservoir is full, discard the first batch of water, which may contain process dust. (Note: when lower chamber is full of water, the PF-4™ filters will be immersed).
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
MTBE: The PF-4™ is manufactured to exceed ANSI/NSF Standard 53 which requires that MTBE be reduced by at least two thirds from an influent rate (water going in) of 15ppb to an effluent rate (water going out) of less than 5ppb (> 95% reduction*).LEAD: Tests have shown that when 2000 gallon (7,600 liters) of influent water at a concentration of lead of 150-200 ppb pass through 200 grams of media at a flow rate of 1 gpm (3.8 lpm), the lead level was reduced to less than 1ppb (>99% reduction).FLUORIDE: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm (11 lpm) per cubic foot of media. Results of < 1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).
REPLACEMENT:
Under normal conditions it is recommended that PF-4™ elements be replaced at six-month intervals (Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of total organic carbons, volatile organic compounds or certain inorganic minerals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of these elements.)*. Note: do not boil this element.

Under this regulation, the state of Iowa requires that any water treatment system that is sold in the state first be certified by an independent, third-party testing agency, such as NSF, before the system can be considered eligible for sale in Iowa. NSF Standard 42 (aesthetic effects) and Standard 53 (health effects) would specifically apply to our purification elements.
NSF Standard 42 covers systems “designed to reduce specific aesthetic or non-health-related contaminants such as chlorine, taste and odor, and particulates that may be present in public or private drinking water. NSF Standard 53 addresses “systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, lead, Volatile Organic Chemicals, MTBE that may be present in public or private drinking water.”
The tests we have conducted are much more rigorous than those required by NSF for the certifications mandated by the state of Iowa. Our purifiers have been rigorously tested by third-party independent accredited labs far surpassing the above standard of taste, odor and chlorine reduction. For example, our systems have been tested for the removal of hundreds of contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, pathogenic bacteria and viruses. These test results are published and available to all our consumers on our website as well as published in our printed literature. In addition, there has also been other highly publicized and notable testing of our purifiers against other so-called similar water filtration systems which clearly back up our third-party testing. Although our extensive testing is sufficient for 49 states in the US, it is currently not acceptable for residents of the state Iowa.
Once NSF certification has been obtained, the state of Iowa additionally requires that systems further be registered with the Iowa Department of Public Health One major problem arises because each flexible configuration we offer is considered by the state of Iowa to be a distinct and separate system that must be certified independently. Under Iowa legislation the expense required to certify each system is $800.00 per configuration.
While this may not be a problem for companies that are inflexible with respect to the systems they offer or have few product offerings, such requirements place a huge burden upon companies that do offer such flexibility, (i.e. multiple variations of water filter systems).
In the end, we have concluded that the additional taxes, certifications and red tape have created too large of a barrier for our firm to offer our systems in the state of Iowa.

Fill the Sport Berkey® Portable Water Purifier with water, screw on cap and tighten securely to eliminate leaks. Flush water through filter by pulling down lever, so that straw is exposed, and squeeze water through filter & out the straw. Repeat this flushing process twice before drinking. This removes excess process dust from the filter. After 2 flushes, rinse the bottle & cap. Your filter bottle is now ready for use. Enjoy!
Maintenance and Storage
The Sport Berkey® Portable Water Purifier has a shelf life of 50 years. When the filter system will not be used for an extended period, flush the unit with a chlorinated solution of 1/4 tsp. per one half gallon of water. Allow to dry thoroughly with cap removed. Re-assemble and stow. Do not allow filter to freeze, do not place in microwave oven and do not run hot water through the filter.
